perimenopause weight gain

A New Discovery in Menopausal Weight Gain

Menopause is known as a time where women’s bellies get bigger and hormones get smaller. This can be extremely aggravating, because of the level of difficulty that comes with shedding this extra weight. The lack of Estrogen changes women’s body shape and the lack of density in bones adds to the increase in fat on their bodies.

However, a recent study done on mice shows that one specific hormone could be the predator of this unfortunate weight gain. If you are dealing with vaginal dryness, hot flashes and weight gain, check this information out to hopefully rid of at least one of those problems.

Follicle Stimulating Hormone

This hormone is best known for stimulating the production of eggs in women and is therefore primarily associated with reproduction. Dr. Zaidi, a professor at Icahn School of Medicine in New York City, was the first to research its role in bone loss.

He created an antibody to block F.S.H. in mice who no longer had their ovaries. They were not making estrogen, similar to menopausal women, so normally that would lead to bone loss. Surprisingly, the mice did not lose fat-filled bone marrow, which is what would normally happen, and instead lost fat.

Another Study

Wendy Kohrt, a professor at the University of Colorado conducted a study where she blocked estrogen and F.S.H. in premenopausal women. After about five months, the fat moved to their abdomens and they burnt 50 fewer calories each day. When the study participants stopped taking the drug that was doing this and instead were given estrogen, the weight was reversed.

Will it Work on Us?

Researches on this experiment are not quick to say that the results of the study on the mice will translate directly to humans. Although it seems promising, they cannot be sure at this point.

If you are suffering from the evils of menopause, including vaginal dryness and painful intercourse, consider talking to your doctor about F.S.H. in an effort to prevent the abdomen weight gain.
